Overlooking world class golf courses and Nordic skiing terrain in Sun Valley, Idaho, the 60,000 square foot Golf and Nordic Clubhouse provides its patrons with unrivaled amenities for year round outdoor opportunities. The Owner’s vision for the project imagined a monumental recreational core for the four season resort area.
The facility primarily caters to the adjacent 27-hole golf course and the 25 miles of groomed Nordic skiing trails with a restaurant, lounge, bar, pro shop, and locker rooms. Equipment repair, rental, and storage areas are also provided. In addition, the Clubhouse serves as a meeting place to initiate hiking, biking, and backcountry skiing adventures in the surrounding mountains and provides a comfortable refuge to relax and reflect on the day’s events.
The Clubhouse architecture is organized by a strong axial procession through barrel vaults, columns, and vaulted ceilings supported by heavy timber trusses. One enters the facility under a large Porte Cochere, circulates through the vaulted Lounge Area, and arrives at the restaurant and bar area where views across the golf course and Nordic trails extend to the surrounding mountains. The visual weight of the locally quarried natural stone columns provides a rhythm to the circulation and the barrel vault doorways accentuate moments of spatial transition. The restaurant and lounge areas are highlighted by large stone fireplaces. Natural stone, in conjunction with the use of heavy timber, provides the facility with a sense of durability, permanence, and warmth.
